Short Stories: The Drive

"Welcome home boet!" The colourful sign is a sight to behold amongst the sea of expectant faces, each waiting for one of their own. As my own welcoming committee registers my presence, the banner flutters to the ground, the arms that had held it now wrapped firmly around my waist. My sister lifts her face long enough to plant one of her trademark sloppy kisses on my cheek before holding me at arms length and giving me a thorough once over.

"Hmm, a bit on the skraal side hey. Mom's going to love this chance to fatten you up. Her prodigal son."

mind stilled as I listened out for my unknown pursuers.

For several seconds, all I could hear was the traffic on the adjacent street, and then I

heard what to my ears sounded like a small army, but in reality was only about five of them.

They sounded massive, Goliaths to my David and their footsteps echoed between the highrise

buildings as they passed the van concealing the entrance... read more
